A long while ago when I was an Explorer (Scouts for 14 to 18 year olds) and my Dad was our troop leader, the whole scout group would congregate once a year in the Summer which we called our Group Gathering. There was this one night when me, Dad and some other guys drove to Johns Lee Wood to set up everything before all the kids and parents arrival the following day.
That night, it was just me and dad to guard the camp. Our camp fire was lit, we both relax, I pulled out my guitar, and a few little woodland creatures dropped by to listen in. To this day, Dad claims this one of the best memories between us two.
Several years later, and it was Christmas Shopping Season '08, and a light bulb appeared above my head and switched itself on. I assumed it was to do with the fact that I came up with a brainwave of making a canvas for Dad. And so, I quickly doodled, coloured and rendered a pic to commemorate this memory and have a canvas printer in town finish the job off for £45 ready for wrapping.
Christmas Eve, I was due to see Dad that evening, but before I could even lay my hands on the wrapping paper, Mum suggests I varnish it so it would last longer, for the fact that my parents used to sell paintings. What she failed to realise was this was a print, not a painting, but I assumed at the time she knew what she was doing. We began varnishing it in the morning, but by late afternoon it hadn't dried up. Mum got upset, and sent one of my sisters to buy another copy.
In the end she came back in time, we had it wrapped and went over to Dads place and when I presented Dad's present, he seemed very impressed.
Nice! I was in the Scouts myself, from ages 10 to 13, when I quit on my own accord. In Scotland, the ages for scouts was 10-15 I believe, although it's been a while since I left so it might have changed...
I was picked on a lot by older and younger scouts since joining in late 1997. In 2000 I was the third oldest in my patrol, and the PL was set to leave, so I'd get to be APL. I got a bit stroppy about being picked on one night when I was leading my patrol (no respect or anything), and because I made a fuss of it the leader had the next oldest guy in my patrol (a total prat) be in charge for the night (who then put an even younger guy as his second that night). It was humiliating.
When I was then threatened with the prospect of the fat arsehole below me getting to be APL instead of me (because I wasn't going to enough camps among other things), I decided that I really could not afford to lose what little dignity I had left, and quit at the end of 2000. I kind of felt that the time had come.
The leaders were always on my side in general, but even they couldn't get my fellow scouts to lay off me. It is as shame really because I have some fond memories of the scouts, but I guess when it came to the newbies calling you things like "homo!", "gay!" and "English prick!" it does get too much to bear. I wish I could have handled it better.
Clearly not. And I'm only half-english They must have been very racist to only knowingly accept pure bred Scots. Not the leaders' fault, just some of the other boys there.
