Went to see
Persepolis at Broadway (subtitled of course) and thought is was worth the watch. Here's a couple of good scenes from the film...
Marjane at 13 is sent to Vienna and makes some new friends when they ask her about the islamic revolution she went through in her childhood. The punk band at the end of the clip nearly made me laugh!.Marjane's relationship with her second boyfriend, a charming and handsome playwright, turned out he was cheating on her. When her landlady asks Marjane for a posession back, Marjane leaves from her and her hyped dog in disgrace. She sees herself as a fool, and starts making fun of her ex-boyfriend in her mind, but now she's got nowhere to live!I first thought the film was based in France, but when I got about 20 minutes into the film, I realised it was actually situated in Iran, hence the title "Persepolis", so I didn't have enough attention to take in the cause of the Iraq/Iran war. Plus I did find it a little tricky trying to pay attention to the film and the subtitles at the same time, but this was probably cause I was sitting quite close to the screen.
Going back on the subject of the plot, as a result of the war she was sent to Vienna to study in serenity, and I got quite into the film from this point onwards. It was good to see Marjane fit in quite quickly, and then when she hits rock bottom she returns back to Iran. Almost like a kind of Lion King structure except she only returned home cause she missed her family.
I remember asking myself at one point in the film about whether people would say this would be better off in live-action or left as it is. And if it did, I probably wouldn't imagine the film would be able to satire moments like
when Marjane disgraced her seemingly hideous transition into a woman.
I bet I'll have more to say about the film if I get to see it again, but this is all I could think of, except this. When it came to the presentation of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the shortlist consisted of "Persepolis", "Surfs Up", and "Ratatouille". If it weren't for "Ratatouille", I believe it would have surely gone to "Persepolis". I suppose I'd rather watch "Ratatouille" than Persepolis for many reasons I can't quite explain, but I still have pretty much the same amount of appreciation for both films.
